Winter Depression

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a psychological disorder also known as winter depression can be seen in many people.  SAD can affect people’s lives negatively and result in unhappiness, low self-esteem and lack of energy.  If these symptoms last longer than 2 weeks you need to consult a specialist immediately.

Psychologist, Aycan Bulut of Central Hospital says that along with the changes in the weather and the decrease in sun rays during these winter months people easily fall into a depressive state.  The cold weather also prevents socialization.

DEPRESSION REDUCES QUALITY OF LIFE

Depression that is repetitive and ongoing causing negativity in a person's psychology and mood disorders can complicate their lives. The symptoms experienced can reduce people's quality of life and go as far as disrupting vital functionalities. These people are particularly desperate and feel intense loneliness.  In order to properly diagnose depression, symptoms must continue for 2 weeks.

ENERGY LOSS AND ATTENTION DEFICIENCY

Depression can cause intense sadness, low –self esteem, loss of energy, insomnia, anorexia, attention deficit disorder, unwillingness and the inability to enjoy life.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES MAY OCCUR IN THE WINTER

Physiological changes in those who are affected negatively by the winter months can be seen with the arrival of winter.  Because the cold weather prevents most from partaking in outdoor activities they spend most of their free time indoors.  Those who have been previously diagnosed with depression are more prone to have symptoms again.  Most cases have to do with knowing the expectations and so forth. For example an increase of responsibility in the winter can trigger depression.

SIGNS MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE

The severity of winter depression can be felt differently depending on the various personalities.  As mentioned before symptoms of depression lasting for more than 2 weeks affecting a person's personal, social and business life if the negative impact should be discussed with a specialist.  There is a 25 % chance of some sort of depression for people throughout a lifetime.  Women in particular are more affected by depression.

Those who suffer from seasonal depression may feel more energized during the summer months. In addition, excessive food cravings, low physical activity, weight gain, and the need for continuous sleep.

SOCIALIZE!

It is important that people who have signs of winter depression spend time outdoors especially in the mornings between 6-10 am.  Socializing with friends, exercising and recreational activities can be done to overcome this situation.  Focus on positive thoughts in order to enhance positive behaviour.

Psychotherapy use to overcome negative thoughts

Drugs should not be the only option for winter depression.  In addition to solving their problems through speaking; individuals should also seek psychotherapy techniques to change their lifestyles during this time.  The main goal of psychotherapy is to eliminate negative thoughts.  Getting rid of negative thoughts and regaining self confidence are among the first steps for healing.
