10 Reasons to Avoid Drinking Soda

With the widespread consumption of soft drinks, it is important to evaluate how the sugar filled beverage can influence out health.  Even with minimal research, it is clearly evident that even moderate consumption of soda is dangerous. 

1. Sugar- One can of soda contains approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar.  Sugar in liquid form shoots up blood sugar that then leads to an insulin reaction in the body.  Over time this leads to weight gain and more so; diabetes. 

2. Artificial Sweeteners- Diet sodas use aspartame which is a substitute for sugar.  Yes, we are indeed cutting back our sugar intake however we are actually adding a more harmful content into our bodies.  Aspartame has been linked to many different health problems like multiple sclerosis, brain tumors and seizures.  Diet sodas also increase risks of metabolic syndrome that causes fat in the belly, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. 

3. Caffeine- Most sodas contain caffeine which can cause irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and other problems. 

4. Water- Because the water used in making soda is usually tap water. It can contain chlorine, fluoride and traces of metals.

5. Obesity- Researchers have linked the consumption of soft drinks to obesity.  A study done on teenagers who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t drink. 

6. Extra Fructose- The content of fructose corn syrup is very high in soda.  Most of the corn used is genetically modified.  Also, the process of making corn syrup involves traces of mercury which can lead to long term health issues. 

7. Lack of Nutrients- Soda contains zero nutritional value.  Soda is an unnatural beverage that is harmful!

8. Dehydration- The high sugar content in soda dries out your mouth and dehydrates the body over a long period of time.  On the contrary to some beliefs, soda is probably the worst thirst quencher of all time.

9. Bad for Teeth- Regular soda consumption leads to plaque, cavities and even gum disease.  The mixture of sugar and acid dissolves enamel. 

10. Kidney Issues- Sodas contain high levels of phosphoric acid which has been linked to kidney stones and renal problems. 

Forget the fact that some will argue that anything in moderation is okay, some people drink soda in place of water which is scary really.  Soda in not healthy in any amount and there is no reason to continue “enjoying” this harmful beverage after reading all of its drawbacks.  I understand the difficulty of cutting back on something cold turkey however, when your health is at stake, it is time to look for other natural sweet alternatives to quench your thirst and wash down your meal.
